when using ls -al command, directories will display as dr but files will not have dr. Another way to tell is by colors: directory will be in blue but files will be in black and white.

command ls -al shall display files/directories in root. Directories appear in blue while file names are in white-on-black.

List the files and directories using the ls -al command
directories will have a dr in front of the permission.
